KNUT Criticizes TSC for Abolishing Schemes of Service.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers Secretary General Wilson Sossion has called on the Teachers Service Commission to reinstate promotions based on the Commission’s schemes of service for tutors.

Mr. Sossion took issue with the circular issued by the TSC on 2nd  May this year stating that promotions would only be based on  performance.

The teachers burn the performance contracting templates. They vowed to continue resisting them.

Sossion, who spoke on Saturday during an Annual General Meeting for the KNUT Kakamega South branch, argued that the circular is irregular and illegal as it is not backed by the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the union, the commission and the code of regulations.

He said when the teachers are denied annual increments and promotions, the government intends to hold back Sh. 5 billion annually due to the teachers.

The vocal trade unionist, who led the teachers in burning performance contracting templates, threatened to call a national strike if the circular is not revoked within a month.

“It is against  international labour conventions and practice to withdraw a right or privilege already being enjoyed by a worker,” he stated.

He at the same time criticized the National Treasury for imposing a 16 per cent VAT on petroleum products saying it has made life difficult for the masses.

For a country to attain socio-economic development, he said, it has to reduce and offload taxes so as to foster investment.
