Aquaponics farming, a project being supported by the Vihiga county government and other strategic partners is taking root in the region following the establishment of a modern system at Kaimosi Friends Vocational Training Centre.
During the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) – Advancing Resilient Nutrition Sensitive Aquaculture (ARNSA) monitoring visit on Wednesday, County Project Coordinator Wilson Munala briefed officials from the Aquaculture Business Development Programme (ABDP) on the benefits the system intends to bring to the institution.
He noted that the integration of fish farming and crop production will help students gain practical skills while promoting sustainable food production.
Kaimosi Vocational Training Centre Manager Zadock Munala praised the initiative, saying it intends to significantly boost learning in the aquaponics unit as well as the catering department, which will utilise fresh produce grown through the system.
“The school is grateful for this support, and we are committed to ensuring the initiative thrives,” he said.
Plans are underway to construct two fish ponds at the institution. The centre is also one of the key sites where new fish kiosks are being installed under the NORAD–ARNSA project.
Farmers affiliated with the programme are expected to begin harvesting fish in December, marking a major milestone for the community-based aquaculture initiative.
Vihiga is becoming a growing hub for innovative and nutrition-sensitive aquaculture technologies.
