Fida pushes Sh80 million mediation centre as fundraising drive enters home stretch

The Federation of Women Lawyers (Fida-Kenya) is racing to complete an Sh80 million family mediation centre, with the facility expected to be up and running by January next year.

Head of Programmes Janet Anyango said the project, now 70 per cent complete, would offer an alternative justice pathway for families seeking faster, affordable and dignified dispute resolution, particularly for women and girls who often struggled with costly and lengthy court processes.

She added that the centre would facilitate virtual mediation sessions from any corner of the world to enhance access to justice for women and girls across the country.

She made the remarks on Saturday during a fundraising golf tournament at the Nyanza Golf Club in Kisumu, an event organised to push the initiative closer to the finish line as the organisation marks 40 years of operations.

“We are excited that Fida has turned 40. Beyond celebrating, we are looking at sustainability. We want a mediation centre where families can resolve disputes peacefully,” Anyango said.

She noted that the organisation has already raised almost three-quarters of the Sh80 million required and is calling on more partners to help complete the project, which would also serve as a safe space for survivors of violence.

The centre will house a virtual justice space, counselling units, pro bono legal services, and facilities for self-representation training.

This, she said, was in response to the growing demand of the services across FIDA’s national network.

“Women trust Fida because we resolve matters out of court, restore relationships and support families. Even men are coming on board as allies, paralegals and pro bono lawyers,” Anyango said.

Fida hopes to complete the remaining phase of construction and fully equip the centre before January, positioning it as one of the country’s key alternative justice hubs.

“Our mission is clear ensuring no woman or girl experiences violence and that all can access justice with dignity and inclusion,” Anyango said.

Advocates Phyllis Chepkemboi and Silvya Mudai who took part in the tournament, praised Fida for bringing the event to the Western region, saying it highlights the organisation’s impact and strengthens partnerships with local lawyers, golfers and institutions.

Chepemboi said the real winners of the day were the women and girls while Mudai commended the turnout and growing support from partners.
