Kiambu expands security lighting to boost trade

Kiambu County has intensified efforts to enhance public safety and stimulate nighttime economic activity through the installation of high-mast security lighting towers, popularly known as “Mulika Mwizi”.

Preparations are underway for the installation of a high-mast floodlight in Kagongo Village near the Kagongo–Mbiu junction. The project is being implemented by the National Government through the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), with the mast set to be erected at the Chief’s Office in Kagongo.

In Riabai Ward, installation of streetlights from Riabai Shopping Centre to Gatina Road is ongoing under the same programme. Several other areas are also benefiting, including Gituamba Circular and Kagongo in Ting’ang’a, Brethren Riara Water Road in Ndumberi, Kangoya Road, Elizabeth Street and Karura Lane in Kiamumbi, Karambaini from the junction of Indian Bazaar, and a high mast at Thathii-ini.

The region is largely composed of farming households, with dairy farming serving as a major economic activity. Many residents transport milk to collection centres in the early morning hours. Others engage in coffee and horticultural farming, small-scale poultry keeping, boda boda transport services, and retail trade within local trading centres.

Once completed, the lighting projects are expected to significantly improve visibility, enhance security, and ease movement during early mornings and at night. Improved lighting is also likely to extend business hours, strengthen safety for boda boda operators, and help curb theft that has previously disrupted economic activities.

Kiambu Town Member of Parliament Machua Waithaka emphasised that security remains a key leadership priority.

“My leadership remains steadfast in ensuring enhanced security and improved livelihoods for our people. Yangu Ni Kazi Tu!” he said.

The initiative underscores continued efforts to expand essential infrastructure, improve safety, and promote sustainable socio-economic development across Kiambu County.
