Governor Wamatangi commissions new Thigio Stadium

Governor Kimani Wamatangi formally commissioned the newly constructed Thigio Stadium in Ndeiya Ward, Limuru Sub-county, Tuesday, marking a historic achievement  in  sports development in Kiambu County.

Located  at the heart of Limuru Sub-county, Thigio Stadium is a key component of the Governor’s ambitious plan to modernize sports infrastructure throughout Kiambu County. As one of the six new stadia currently under construction, the facility is designed as a multi-sport hub, featuring a standard football pitch fitted with AstroTurf for local and regional competitions.

The ceremony was attended by hundreds of excited spectators, including local residents, youth organizations, and key leaders, all gathered to celebrate the launch of this significant new sports hub.

Governor Wamatangi emphasized his dedication to empowering young people through strategic investments in sports infrastructure.

He emphasized the crucial role Thigio Stadium will play in the community, projecting it as a central hub for nurturing local talent, fostering community cohesion, and generating new opportunities for youth involvement in athletics.

The Stadium’s opening now follows the highly publicized installation of the AstroTurf that is artificial grass used on sports fields, playgrounds and landscaping back in July. This Phase generated substantial online excitement and attracted significant attention from both sports enthusiasts and various digital media outlets in the preceding weeks.

The Stadium served as the ideal debut venue, immediately hosting the grand finale of the inaugural Wamatangi Cup , right after the official opening, officially putting the new facility to use.

The highly anticipated final, saw Githunguri Seniors FC and Butterfly FC battle it out in a highly charged match.

With the score locked at the end of regular time, the intense rivalry led to a dramatic penalty shootout to determine the inaugural champion.

In a fitting close to the opening day, Githunguri Seniors FC claimed the Wamatangi Cup, along with a Sh500,000 cash prize.

The sight of the champions lifting the trophy in the State-of-the-Art facility, amidst the vibrant colors, cheering fans, and intense action, stirred immense pride among residents and formally ushered in a new era of sports growth in the region.

This dual achievement marks a significant step in the promotion of sports and youth development in Limuru Sub-county, signaling the beginning of a brighter future for athletics across Kiambu County.
