729 youth to be hired under climate workx programme

A total of 729 youth from all the wards in Elgeyo Marakwet county will be hired under the climate workx programme.

The County Commissioner Dr. John Korir, said out of these, 705 will be hired to undertake various duties and will earn 500 daily, while 24 will be hired as supervisors, earning 550 per day. He added that the group will be divided into two, with each cohort working for 10 days, that is, two weeks for the next six months.

Speaking during a county implementation committee meeting in his office, the CC said to date a total of over 13,000 youth have applied for the jobs and assured all the applicants that the selection process will be transparent.

He said preference will be given to youth from very humble backgrounds, adding that only one youth will be hired per family and must be between 18-35 years old.

The CC said the selection panels, which will be headed by the deputy county commissioners, will ensure that they consider gender balance by ensuring that half of each gender is hired, adding that people with disabilities will also be included.

Dr Korir called on the youth who will be successful to ensure that their phone numbers match with their ID numbers and that they are registered with M-Pesa for ease of payment and that no proxies will be allowed.

“We don’t want a situation where one is working while someone else gets paid,” he said.

The committee resolved that the 705 slots will be equally divided in the 4 constituencies, with the selection panels dividing the slots based on the wards in the respective constituency.

The youth will be mainly engaged in the roads and environment sectors in clearing of bushes and drainages, planting of trees and establishment of nurseries.
