Vihiga to boost apiculture sector through strategic partnership

Vihiga governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo has announced renewed efforts to revitalize the apiculture sector in the county.

Subsequently, Dr. Ottichilo has held a meeting with Norah Khamula, a representative from The Source Plus organization, which focused on strategies to scale up beekeeping activities as a means of improving livelihoods and generating sustainable income for local farmers.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fostering partnerships that support agricultural development, particularly in high-potential areas such as apiculture.

“The Source Plus has outlined an impressive approach to support our farmers and we are ready to work with them to unlock the potential of the beekeeping industry in Vihiga County,” said Dr. Ottichilo, during the meeting held at the governor’s office.

The organization plans to roll out its apiculture support initiative through the onboarding of local farmers, provision of modern beehives, training and capacity building to enhance honey production and facilitating access to local and international markets for honey and related products.

Dr. Ottichilo noted that the initiative aligns with his government’s broader agenda of promoting agribusiness, environmental conservation and rural empowerment.
