The Ministry of Interior in partnership with the Kipsoen National polytechnic has started a campaign to mobilise youth to enrol at the institution.
The Keiyo North sub-county DCC Julius Maiyo said the department will be holding various barazas from the sub-location level, where it will work with career coaches and officers from the ministry of education to advise youth.
Speaking in his office in Iten, Maiyo said the youth will be advised on the various courses which they can undertake and on market trends and called on both the youth and parents to attend the barazas.
He added that they were targeting to mop up youth who sat their national examinations in the year 2020 saying there were many youth idling in the villages who were at risk of engaging in vices like drug abuse, among others.
The DCC said Kipsoen polytechnic was offering 46 courses, including being one of the few centres which offer a mechatronics course and therefore the youth will have a wide range of courses which they can choose from.
Maiyo said the government was undertaking various programmes citing the construction of the affordable housing and fresh produce market in the subcounty where the youth with skills can be hired and get an income.
He continued that skilled youth can register companies to benefit from the 30% tenders set aside in all government institutions for youth, women and people with disabilities.
The DCC said the government was also offering loans to students through the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) and also bursaries through the NG-CDF to enable students to pay their school fees.
He regretted that many youth had the misconception that they can only work in offices, saying technical training enabled them to not only employ themselves but also to offer employment to others.
Maiyo added that the skills offered in the polytechnic were of high standards, enabling them to not only get jobs locally but also internationally.
