The government, through the State Department for Housing and Urban Development under the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP), is constructing a Sh50 million modern market in Maraba area, Tindiret Sub County, Nandi County.
The project, currently under implementation, is expected to transform the area into a commercial hub by accommodating about 200 traders and linking Maraba to larger markets in Kisumu, Uasin Gishu, and Kericho counties.
Project Engineer Allan Kimtai said the contractor was given a six-month timeline from July 2025 to complete the construction.
He noted that the market will feature modern amenities such as cold rooms for preserving perishable goods, Information Communication Technology (ICT) hubs for digital connectivity and record keeping, office spaces for administrative operations, and mother lactating rooms. It will also include a reliable water supply, ablution blocks, garbage receptacles, and electricity connections.
“These facilities are designed to improve the trading environment, fostering comfort, hygiene, and productivity,” Kimtai explained.
He added that the inclusion of electricity and structured waste management systems will make the market safer and more conducive for both traders and customers.
The Maraba modern market project reflects the government’s broader strategy to catalyze economic development in Tindiret Sub County by strengthening trade infrastructure and promoting a vibrant business environment.
