Governor’s cup tournament gains momentum 

Machakos county governor Wavinya Ndeti’s 3rd Edition Football Tournament cup is gaining traction as local teams from five wards advanced to sub county competition after intense action and commitment from the players.

The teams from Machakos Central, Kalama, Masii, Muvuti-Kiima Kimwe, and Kola-Muumandu have successfully proceeded to the Sub County level, amid tough competition from the wards as they are all eyeing the coveted Sh1 million prize from the governor that has seen youths train, show consistency, rigor and dedication in the pitch.

Scottlanders FC from Machakos Central Ward stomped on Mta FC 7-6 amid cheers and songs, whereas Jua Kali Queens also put on a strong show, narrowly defeating Machakos Queens 4-3 in a tough battle.

Meanwhile, in Muvuti-Kiima Kimwe Ward, Katoloni FC defeated Katoloni Heroes 2-0, while on the women’s side, Katoloni Starlets advanced on aggregate after strong performances in their fixtures.

Masii Heroes from Masii Ward, whooped a 2-0 victory over Kyaitha FC in the men’s final as the women’s category with Masii Starlets overpowered Vyulya Queens with 3-2 in a closely contested match.

Over in Kalama Ward, Vatican Lions triumphed over Mulaani FC 3-2, earning the ward’s men’s slot at the Sub-County stage and in the women’s category, Mbukoni Ladies emerged top after a competitive round-robin tournament while in Kola-Muumandu Ward, Kitonyini FC edged Muumandu FC 1-0, and Malaika Starlets mirrored the same score line against Mutalani to secure qualification.

Machakos County Director Sports and Youth Onesmus Ituo, who spoke at Machakos Show grounds before the competitions, commended the increasing number of dedicated players and called upon the team managers and Captains to instill discipline on the players to get them focused on their goal.

Ituo added that besides training and scouting of players, they were also doing guiding and counselling for the youths that enhances overall mental wellbeing and resilience, helps them to keep off drug abuse, encourages team work and improves their performance under pressure.

As the journey to the final tournament draws near, the competitive atmosphere in the county has sparked excitement and a sense of camaraderie among the youths and sports enthusiasts fostering emotional, physical and social growth.
