Nyandarua embarks on massive coffee farming awareness campaign

Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha has announced plans to launch an extensive sensitisation campaign on coffee farming as part of the county’s agricultural diversification programme.

Speaking during a visit to Matumi Village in Githioro Ward, Kipipiri Sub-county, where he toured a coffee farm owned by one Mr. Solomon Njenga, Governor Badilisha said the initiative would officially kick off by the end of November this year.

The County Head noted that the new crop adds to the introduction of apples, avocados, and pyrethrum, which have been identified as viable cash crops in Nyandarua.

He noted that the county is keen on shifting from its long-standing reliance on potato farming to high-income crops that could boost farmers’ earnings and strengthen the local economy.

“My administration will continue to invest and innovate in new crop varieties that are adaptive to this county’s climatic conditions to create sustainable cash flow for the farmers and anchor Nyandarua as a high-yielding region for agricultural investments,” said Badilisha.

Githioro Ward MCA Isaac Mbae welcomed the county’s diversification efforts, saying the County Assembly would continue to support programmes that enhance farmers’ productivity and profitability.

Njenga, whose farm hosted the Governor, said his experience has proven that coffee farming could thrive in the area and urged more farmers to take up the venture.

Nyandarua is traditionally known as a potato-growing county, but its leadership is now focused on transforming the region into a hub for diverse, high-value crops capable of delivering consistent income and long-term agricultural sustainability.
