Second Mpox case reported in Homa Bay County

Homa Bay County has reported the second case of Mpox disease as health personnel rush to contain further spread of the disease.

County Government Spokesperson Atieno Otieno said the first case was a 41-year-old man while second case is a 44-year-old male from Ndhiwa Sub-County who had been invigilating KCSE examinations at Okok Secondary School.

She said both patients are clinically stable and are currently isolated.

Some of the measures taken by health teams include rapid case finding, investigation and contact tracing.

Ms Otieno said a multi-sectoral coordination team is overseeing the response.”Community Health Promoters are also conducting household surveillance and health education,” the county government spokesperson said.

She said that the government is also working closely with the agencies including the Ministry of Health, World Health Organization and Kenya Red Cross for technical support.

Other organisations brought on board include Centre for Disease Control and Médecins Sans Frontiers (Doctors without Borders).

Ms Otieno said residents are advised to avoid close contact with anyone who has Mpox symptoms which includes rash, fever or swollen lymph nodes. She said people displaying signs for the disease should seek prompt medical attention.

“Any unusual illness patterns in schools, markets, churches, workplaces, or communities should be reported immediately.”
