Stanbic donates 40 laptops to Vihiga to boost digital training

Vihiga County Government has received a donation of 40 laptops from the Stanbic Foundation to support digital learning in Vocational Training Centres (VTCs).

The donation, delivered through the Department of Education, will be distributed to Keveye, Maseno, Gimomoi and Busaina VTCs.

The gadgets are expected to address a key gap identified during a recent Training of Trainers (ToT) exercise, where instructors cited limited access to digital devices as a major challenge in implementing modern training methods.

Speaking during the handover, County Executive Committee Member for Education, Science, Technical and Vocational Training, Ann Desma, said the county will ensure proper maintenance of the equipment and promote their effective use in training.

Desma noted that the laptops will expand opportunities for trainees to acquire digital skills, which are increasingly necessary for employment and entrepreneurship.

The initiative is part of Stanbic Foundation’s efforts to bridge the digital divide by strengthening the capacity of VTC instructors and learners.

The Foundation has been training instructors on artificial intelligence and continues to partner with Microsoft to enhance access to digital skills.

Stanbic Foundation Head of Programmes, Dorine Nalo, said the laptops will support youth to access learning content and develop skills relevant to the digital and creative economy.

“This donation will enable young people in our vocational centres to build their capacities, explore opportunities and develop businesses,” she said.

The partnership aligns with the County Integrated Development Plan (2023–2027), which prioritises the enhancement of vocational training through technology.

It also supports Sustainable Development Goal 4 on inclusive and equitable quality education.
