Senator Osotsi warns Shanta Gold to uphold community rights

Vihiga County Senator Godfrey Osotsi has issued a firm warning to Shanta Gold Limited, the company licensed to explore gold deposits in Vihiga and Kakamega counties, urging it to fully respect the rights, welfare, and concerns of local communities as its mining activities progress.

Speaking during the launch of the Luanda Township Farmers’ Sacco in Luanda Sub-County, Senator Osotsi said the company must strictly operate within the law and commit to transparent, inclusive, and respectful engagement with residents. He emphasized that local communities should be meaningfully involved in decisions that may affect their land, livelihoods, and long-term economic prospects.

His remarks come amid heightened tensions in Kakamega County, where recent protests and the arrest of several youths have drawn attention to grievances linked to the mining project. The senator noted that such incidents highlight the need for openness, accountability, and continuous dialogue to prevent conflict and build trust between the company and residents.

Osotsi further challenged Shanta Gold Limited to honor its corporate social responsibility obligations by investing in healthcare, education, infrastructure, and other essential services that directly benefit communities in the mining zones. He said these commitments should not be treated as optional but as integral to ensuring fairness and sustainable development.

The senator, together with other leaders from Western Kenya, has already raised the matter in the Senate, pushing for justice, equitable treatment, and protection of the rights of affected communities. He urged residents to remain calm and allow legal and institutional processes to run their course.

“We insist that the law must guide every aspect of this project,” he said, adding that no resident should feel intimidated, sidelined, or marginalized.
