The government has set up 28 digital hubs in several sub-counties within the Nairobi region to offer digital skill training with the aim of improving the employability and entrepreneurship among the youth.
Nairobi Regional Commissioner (RC), Gilbert Kitiyo, said 11 of the digital hubs are operational, while 17 are pending completion.
The RC who was speaking during a Media Breakfast meeting held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), said the hubs provide a supportive environment for learning and mentorship to foster digital entrepreneurship.
“These hubs are equipped with free internet and computers and offer digital skill training. I urge the youth to take advantage of the facilities to improve their livelihoods,” advised Kitiyo.
On youth empowerment, the RC said the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Fund project is a landmark initiative by the government to transform the lives of vulnerable youth.
NYOTA, which is funded by the World Bank, is expected over the five-year period to create employment opportunities, enhance income generation, and promote savings among the youth population.
The government has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering the youth through the newly launched NYOTA Business Support Program, a nationwide initiative offering Sh50,000 non-refundable grants to young people to help them start or expand their businesses.
The RC said those eligible for the Fund are people aged 18-29 years for able-bodied, while persons with disabilities up to the age of 35 years are eligible.
“Those eligible should have attained Form Four level of education or below and be unemployed, underemployed, or in low-tier employment,” he added.
On the Climate Worx Program, which has to date covered two cohorts, the RC disclosed that the program has employed a total of 54,576 youths in the region.
“This program has enabled them to earn a living and put food on the table for their young families,” Kitiyo said.
