NGO calls for centres to accommodate street children in Kisii

A faith-based community organisation that is helping in reforming street children in Kisii town has appealed to well-wishers and the Kisii County government to consider putting up more rescue centres for street children to protect them from retrogressing into their previous lives after being reformed.

Speaking during a street children’s mentorship program at the Kisii town Pentecostal Assemblies of God church , the Kingdom Child organization’s officials said the children in the rehabilitation centers and schools faced a major challenge during school holidays  because they do not have a home, thereby reversing achieved gains after  rehabilitation.

At least 500 members of the  street families were treated to a free lunch during the event where they were also taught life skills to cope with emerging challenges during  school holidays.

Local Pastor Francis Osero said the event held once a year since 2012 when the organization was launched  assists the children through feeding, mentorship, rehabilitation and education.

Osero said the support was a gesture to show love to the less privileged in the society  by the  church members and well-wishers by contributing food stuffs, clothing and household goods.

Kingdom child CBO Coordinator Moturi Byron said at least 8 children under the program were in school and a few others were in rehabilitation centres.

He appealed to  Governor Simba Arati to provide a safe house to host rehabilitated street children who are still undertaking their studies during the holidays.

He said other challenges were that some ran away from school because they are not fully reformed.
