Wajir County Commissioner Karuku Ngumo has commended the steady improvement in security across the county, saying Wajir now ranks among the safest counties in Kenya.
Speaking during Mashujaa Day celebrations on Monday, Mr. Ngumo cited findings from the 2025 Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) Economic Survey, which placed Wajir at the top of national security rankings.
He said the county has successfully shed its past image of insecurity.
“There is no area of Wajir today that is insecure,” said Mr. Ngumo. “Any assertion to the contrary undermines the county and must not be allowed to deny residents access to services.”
Mr. Ngumo, who chairs the County Security Committee, noted that the committee, working with national and county enforcement officers, the Kenya Police Service, and other agencies, will continue to safeguard peace and protect ongoing development gains.
He cautioned individuals or groups against spreading false claims of insecurity, saying such actions were aimed at tarnishing the county’s image and discouraging investment and service delivery.
On labour disputes affecting a county construction project, the commissioner directed contractors to dismiss casual workers involved in illegal industrial action and replace them to ensure continuity of work. He stressed that any disputes over pay or allowances must be resolved within the confines of the law.
The commissioner also urged political leaders and community elders to discourage the establishment of new settlements, noting that unplanned developments often lead to conflicts and strain limited public resources.
With national examinations approaching, Mr. Ngumo reminded school heads, students, and the public to uphold integrity and discipline during the tests. He praised Wajir’s consistent record of conducting credible examinations and warned that anyone found engaging in malpractice would face legal consequences.
According to the KNBS 2025 Economic Survey, Wajir recorded the lowest number of reported crimes among all 47 counties, a milestone attributed to effective security coordination and collaboration between national and county agencies.
