Alumni, leaders transforming Kagumo school in Tharaka Nithi

Kagumo primary school and Junior School, Tharaka Nithi County, have received a major boost in infrastructure and learning facilities, following the intervention of former pupils, led by businessman Muthomi Micheni, who has built his name in entrepreneurship and community development.

Micheni, popularly known as “810 the Business”, with support from area leaders, returned to his former school to give back, in a move that underscores the growing role of alumni in supporting public education.

His contribution included tiling the school’s administration block, installing a modern ceiling, and donating new furniture to improve its overall working environment.

Micheni said his decision to support the school was driven by the desire to create a better learning atmosphere for the current pupils than what existed during their time at the institution.

“I studied here, and this school laid the foundation for who I am today. Giving back is my way of supporting education and motivating learners to believe that they can succeed,” he said.

The school headteacher Justus Gitonga welcomed the gesture, describing it as a major relief to the institution.

Gitonga noted that the furniture donated included 19-seater desks for learners and 16 desks for teachers, easing congestion and improving classroom organisation.

“This support shows goodwill and has helped solve many of the challenges we have been facing. The improved administration block has also enhanced service delivery and staff morale,” he  said.

The head teacher also thanked the Chuka Igambang’ombe National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) for constructing two new classrooms, expected to be in use next month, which will help in addressing demands of the facility’s rising pupil population.

At the same event, Igambang’ombe Member of Parliament Patrick Munene announced that Kagumo Day Secondary School would be fully free, revealing that he has paid school fees for all students and directed parents not to pay any levies.

“Any parent who takes their child to Kagumo Day Secondary School should not pay anything,” Munene said, adding that he had also donated Sh100,000 towards the school’s feeding programme.

The MP further pledged to construct a kitchen at Kagumo primary school to support their feeding programme and improve learners’ welfare.
