Athletes urged to balance education with sport

Athletes participating in various disciplines have been encouraged to pursue their studies to the highest level possible to benefit from government opportunities as well as sponsorships from both local and international brands.

Speaking during the Central Region Cross Country Championship at Kerugoya Stadium, Athletics Kenya (AK) Central Region Chairperson David Miano emphasized that education is just as important as talent, since both can benefit an athlete in different ways.

He noted that the majority of today’s competitors are young and warned them not to abandon education in pursuit of wealth from sports alone. Miano stressed that knowledge is vital to manage financial gains and to work effectively with multinational corporations keen to invest in athletics.

On doping, Miano cautioned athletes against consuming supplements without medical consultation, noting that the local market is largely unregulated and could easily expose them to banned substances. He advised athletes to always declare their status when seeking treatment in health facilities.

The AK official also urged participants to give their best in order to uplift Kenya’s name on the global stage, citing the country’s recent strong performance at the World Championships in Tokyo.

Addressing team officials, he underscored the importance of safeguarding athletes, particularly young women who may be vulnerable to exploitation by individuals seeking to take advantage of their success and wealth.

Nyandarua County Youth and Sports Chief Officer Edward Kigo reaffirmed the county’s commitment to sponsoring athletes and partnering with Athletics Kenya to promote talent development across the region.

The championship brought together teams from Kiambu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, and Nyandarua counties. A selected regional team will represent Central at the national cross-country championships in Eldoret later this year.

Competitors participated in the 10KM senior men and women races, 8KM under 20 men, 6KM under 20 women, and a 2KM loop for men and women.
