CBC equips learners with practical skills – PS Inyangala

The State Department for Higher Education and Research, Principal Secretary (PS), Beatrice Inyangala, has defended the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) as key to equipping learners with hands-on skills for the job market.

Speaking during a prayer and thanksgiving ceremony at St. John’s Secondary School in Tinderet, Nandi County, Dr. Inyangala said the curriculum aims to produce well-rounded learners who can apply their knowledge in real-life situations.

“In CBC, we don’t just teach a child how to cook—they must actually cook. It’s about practical application,” she said. “You can study business or accounting, but if you can’t help your own parent run a shop, then what’s the use of that knowledge?”

She urged parents to support their children in identifying their strengths whether in sports, science, or the creative arts, and to guide them in choosing appropriate senior school pathways.

“Not every child must be a doctor or engineer. Some are gifted in the arts. Let’s help them pursue what they’re good at,” she said.

The PS also encouraged students who had qualified for university but had not yet been admitted to seek help from her office.

“If you’ve qualified for university and haven’t joined yet, come to my office. We’ll walk the journey with you,” she said.

On the issue of rising university fees, Dr. Inyangala acknowledged concerns from parents and assured them that the government was committed to ensuring access to higher education remained within reach for all deserving students.

Speaking during the same occasion, Tinderet Member of Parliament (MP) Julius Melly rallied students to embrace discipline and hard work if they are to achieve top grades and secure university placement.

“You can’t be a trailblazer if you ignore your assignments,” Melly said. “Discipline is non-negotiable. If you’re not disciplined, you’re not going to make it to university.”

He urged students to aim for higher performance in the upcoming national examinations.

The MP also promised continued support through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), noting that Sh4.3 million had been allocated to support day scholars in the area.

He added that talks were ongoing with the M-Pesa Foundation to help establish one of the biggest day schools in the county.

“We are committed to building a strong education foundation in Tinderet. From six to over 70 private schools, and now with 143 public institutions, we are on the right track,” Melly said.

The event was also attended by education officials and local leaders, who echoed the call for community support in fostering a culture of academic excellence and values among students.
