Chiefs in Rachuonyo South marked Chiefs Climate Action Day by leading tree planting initiatives within their communities.
Nyalenda Location Chief, Hemstone Gumbo, spearheaded the planting of over 200 pine seedlings on Friday at the Deputy County Commissioner’s compound in Kosele.
The seedlings, donated by the community-based organisation Plant Trees for a Better Environment, were planted at the sub-county headquarters, which houses several administrative offices.
Chiefs Climate Action Day is a nationwide monthly initiative held on the first Friday of each month, where local chiefs mobilise residents to plant trees.
The programme contributes to Kenya’s national goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032, a move aimed at building resilience against climate change.
The event was attended by Sub-County Forest Officer Herbert Imbuka and Deputy County Commissioner Denis Kieti, who encouraged community members to embrace environmental conservation.
Mr Kieti emphasised the government’s support for individual efforts in improving the environment, while Mr Imbuka noted that collaboration between chiefs and the Kenya Forest Service is key to achieving national tree-planting targets.
“The joint effort of chiefs and the Kenya Forest Service will ensure the national target is met,” said Mr. Imbuka.
The day concluded with tree watering and awareness sessions, highlighting the importance of forest cover in improving livelihoods and combating climate change.
