Construction Of Kidundu Stadium begins January 2016

The construction of the proposed 10,000-seater ultra-modern Kidundu Stadium in Vihiga County is set to commence in January 2026.

This  follows a high-level meeting to fast-track its implementation on Monday, where Vihiga  Governor Wilber Ottichilo and area Member of Parliament Ernest Kivai Ogesi held discussions with Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya in Nairobi to expedite the Presidential directive on the project.

The facility that is part of the government’s strategy to promote sports infrastructure and youth empowerment across the country will be constructed by Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) engineering teams.

Governor Ottichilo said the stadium will not only provide a platform for nurturing sports talent but also boost the local economy through job creation and business opportunities.

“This project will transform Vihiga into a regional sports hub and open new avenues for youth empowerment and community development,” he said.

The stadium is expected to spur economic growth, create employment, and attract both national and international sporting events to the county.

The County Government of Vihiga has already secured three acres for the project and is working with relevant stakeholders to acquire the remaining 17 acres required for the development of the facility and associated infrastructure.

Governor Ottichilo assured that all affected persons will be fairly compensated to ensure a smooth land acquisition process.

Meanwhile, the county leadership also paid a courtesy call on Vice Chief of Defence Forces (VCDF) Lt General John Omenda, where discussions focused on strengthening collaboration between the Ministry of Defence and the County Government in implementing the project.

Once complete, the Kidundu Stadium is expected to significantly enhance sports development and contribute to the socio-economic transformation of Vihiga County.
