County elevates maternal, child care with new level four facility

Trans Nzoia County has intensified efforts to ensure accessible and quality healthcare for residents, following the completion of the Tom Mboya Mother and Baby Level 4 Hospital, a project Governor George Natembeya has described as a game changer for the health sector.

Governor Natembeya said the modern, life-serving facility is designed to provide high-quality maternal and child healthcare.

Among its benefits, he highlighted that the hospital will significantly reduce the distance residents must travel to access maternal services, supporting ongoing efforts to lower maternal and child mortality linked to birth complications.

Revealing that plans to equip the facility are in their final stages ahead of the official opening, Natembeya emphasised his administration’s commitment to strengthening health systems in the region.

“We are currently at the final stages of equipping the facility, after which the hospital will be officially opened to serve mothers and newborns with dignity, safety, and excellence,” he said.

The Governor lauded the power of partnership with the national government, through the Ministry of Health, and the World Bank, which he described as key to realising the facility.

He added that he is committed to nurturing further collaborations for the benefit of residents.

“Through collaboration with the Ministry of Health and World Bank, we are able to provide this facility, which will help reduce maternal and child mortality, prevent avoidable loss of life, and secure a healthier future for our people,” he reiterated.

The completion of the Tom Mboya Mother and Baby Level 4 Hospital coincides with the national government’s efforts to finalise the Maternal and Infant Wing at Endebess Sub County Hospital, which will also elevate that facility to Level 4 status.

Close to Sh258 million has been invested in the facility by the national government as part of efforts to realise universal health coverage.

According to the contractor, nearly 90 per cent of construction works have been completed, with the remaining works expected to be finalised in the next two months, paving the way for commissioning.

The facility will primarily serve Trans Nzoia residents but is also expected to cater to patients from neighbouring counties, including West Pokot and Bungoma, as well as from the neighbouring country, Uganda.
