Uasin Gishu County’s Department of Health has issued a public notice to alert all the residents about the ongoing heavy rains in various parts of the region and the county.
In the public notice, Dr Evans Kiprotich, the County Director of Health, underscored the potential dangers associated with the heavy downpour, which include waterborne diseases like cholera, typhoid and others.
He mentioned flooding as another serious hazard that comes with the heavy rains that lead to the destruction of homes, crops, roads and bridges.
He also outlines risks of landslides, especially in hilly and slopy areas; electric hazards due to fallen powerlines which pose electrocution risk; infrastructure damage like collapsed buildings, toilets and open shades; and lightning and strong winds.
The members of the public were urged to observe various safety measures like avoiding crossing flooded rivers and walking in moving water, entering buildings or latrines showing signs of cracks and keeping children indoors away from rivers and open drains.
Additionally, they should not touch fallen electrical wires; avoid parking or sheltering under trees when raining; store food safely; boil and treat drinking water; stock essential supplies and stay updated all the time through official government and media alerts.
Residents are urged to use hotline numbers 0710646464 or 0532061185 to contact the Uasin Gishu County fire and rescue team and Ambulance/health Services through 0754027027 in case of such emergencies.
