County to get a new anatomy laboratory

Kaimosi Friends University is constructing a modern anatomy laboratory to provide students with training, practical anatomy sessions, a morgue and an income-generating unit (IGU).

This project in education and health sectors, initially scheduled for completion within six months, but has now been fast-tracked and rescheduled to be completed within three months due to high demand.

According to Project Manager Humphrey Silungi, construction is already at 80 percent completion and is on track to be completed and handed over by the end of August.  “Currently, it’s 80 percent complete. By the end of next month, we will be through and ready to hand it over,” he stated.

The anatomy laboratory is poised to be a game-changer for medical students in the region. It is the first of its kind in the area and is expected to significantly reduce the challenges faced by students who previously relied on distant institutions for practical anatomy sessions.

Meanwhile, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Kaimosi Friends University, Prof. Thomas K. Kipkurgat, noted that students have long struggled with the high costs and logistical hurdles of accessing anatomy lab services at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology in Kakamega.

“This facility will ease the burden on our students, who have had to travel long distances and incur high expenses. Thus, it will serve both as an academic resource and an income-generating unit, as well as a morgue,” said Prof. Kipkurgat.

“The project is part of ongoing efforts to improve higher education infrastructure and health services in Vihiga County.

The government-backed project is a significant step in improving education and health infrastructure in Vihiga County and the Western Kenya region.
