CS Duale meets AfDB to advance Kenya’s health projects

Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Aden Duale has held in-depth discussions with a delegation from the African Development Bank (AfDB), focusing on transformative health projects which are set to revolutionize service delivery across Kenya.

The meeting with AfDB led by its Division Manager of the Education and Skills Development Hendrina Doroba, highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring quality, accessible, and equitable healthcare for all citizens.

Notably, a central focus of the talks was the planned construction of a level 6 specialized trauma hospital in Londiani, Kericho County which will respond to the increasing burden of road traffic accidents in the region.

Additionally, the project is also expected to enhance emergency care and provide lifesaving services to those who need them most.

On the other hand, the discussions also reviewed progress on the proposed Level 6 Centre of Excellence in Bungoma County, a facility designed to deliver comprehensive care for Sickle Cell Disease and serve as a regional blood centre.

The CS stated that this initiative is set to significantly strengthen Kenya’s blood transfusion capacity, supporting both routine and emergency medical needs across the region.

In addition, the meeting explored the launch and full operationalization of the East Africa Kidney Institute (EAKI), a collaborative initiative between the Government of Kenya and its partners.

“Once operational, EAKI will expand specialized kidney care, provide enhanced training for health professionals, and reduce reliance on costly international referrals, making life-saving care more accessible to Kenyans,” assured Duale.

Meanwhile, CS Duale reaffirmed the government’s commitment to decentralizing specialized medical services, ensuring that every Kenyan, regardless of location, can access high-quality and affordable care.

Furthermore, he emphasised that these initiatives not only strengthen the health sector but also align with the Government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, contributing to Kenya’s broader social and economic resilience.

Medical Services Principal Secretary Dr. Ouma Oluga, Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, the Ministry’s Curative and Nursing Services Director Dr. Andrew Toro, and Head of Infrastructure, Projects and Grants Dr. Hezron Omollo were in attendance.

They underscored the collaborative approach between the government and development partners in advancing Kenya’s health agenda.
