Distressed man rescued from 300-foot mast in Chuka town, Tharaka Nithi

A 36-year-old man was rescued after climbing a 300-foot communication mast near the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters in Tharaka Nithi County in a suspected suicide attempt.

Tharaka Nithi Fire and Rescue Brigade Commander Alex Mugambi said his team, working jointly with police officers, managed to persuade the man to descend safely after lengthy negotiations.

“Our team spent a considerable amount of time talking to him, and we are relieved that he finally agreed to come down safely. I urge especially men to speak out and share their struggles instead of resorting to such dangerous decisions,” said Mugambi.

Tharaka Nithi County Police Commander Zacheous Ngeno confirmed the incident, saying the man was escorted to Chuka Level Four Hospital for medical assessment.

“The man complied after persuasion and was safely taken to hospital for further medical attention. The results of his assessment will determine whether he undergoes treatment or faces trial,” said Mr. Ngeno.

Authorities commended the teamwork that ensured the man’s life was saved while urging members of the public to prioritize mental health support and seek early intervention in cases of distress.
