Counties Homa-Bay

A 25 year old fisherman drowned last Thursday in Lake Victoria after allegedly consuming     excessive alcohol before going on a fishing expedition at Remba Island in Suba North constituency of Homa Bay County.

The deceased, identified as David Otieno, drowned last evening after they left the beach for fishing activities with his colleague using the same boat.

It was alleged that before the deceased entered into the fishing boat he had already consumed alcohol within the Island. His colleague never realised that he was drunk and upon reaching the middle of the lake, he slide and drowned.

Confirming the incident to KNA, Remba Beach Management Unit (BMU) chairperson Semekiah Okoth Mamra said that Otieno who hails in Gwasi Soba South felt a slip when his colleague was casting the fishing net and in the process, he slide from the boat.

He said that Remba fishermen would embark on the search operation to retrieve the body of their colleague after three days, adding that the body should be given time to start floating.

The BMU chairperson appealed to fishermen to be cautious and avoid taking alcohol while on their fishing expeditions in the Lake.
