EACC recovers grabbed public land in Machakos county

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has succeeded in recovering public land valued at Sh50 million that had been illegally acquired and subdivided into three parcels in Machakos.

EACC Director of Legal Services David Too said the land which originally belonged to the Ministry of Housing  and is situated adjacent to Machakos law courts, was recovered after litigation in court where the EACC proved that the land had been carved out of government premises.

“The Commission carried out investigations and asset tracing and filed a suit in court for asset recovery, and on January 26th this year the court passed judgement in favour of the Commission, declaring the alienation of the grabbed land null and void,” said Director Too.

Addressing a press conference in Machakos on Tuesday, Too insisted that recovered grabbed land must be safeguarded and added the EACC is on a mission to recover all grabbed public land in Machakos, Makueni, Kitui and other parts of the country.

He added that they are currently pursuing grabbed public land that belongs to Machakos Prisons, where 13 parcels have been alienated and the matter is still undergoing the court process as they pursue its recovery.

“The properties that we are pursuing within this region and we have already filed a suit in court, are worth Sh363 million,” said Too.

He further affirmed the Commission’s role and mandate in investigating acts of corruption and promoting ethics while focusing on entrenching integrity and recovering illegally acquired assets, besides restoring public resources for the benefit of citizens.
