The Vihiga County Environment Committee (CEC), which is legally mandated to oversee all environmental matters in the county, Monday convened its quarterly meeting to review progress made across the environment sector.
The two-day exercise held at Sosa Cottages in Gisambai Ward was chaired by the County Executive Committee Member for Environment, Water, Energy, Natural Resources and Climate Change, Dr. Jairus Amayi also focused on identifying emerging challenges requiring intervention.
As part of the meeting, the committee conducted a series of field visits to assess conditions in the extractive and mining sector, waste management, public infrastructure, sanitation, and climate change interventions.
The team also reviewed the impact of ongoing climate resilience projects and other environmental initiatives across the county.
Among the sites visited were the Chambiti PlanetGold mercury-free gold processing centre, Jeblebuk Quarry, Ebuyangu landfill, Ebusiekwe Apiary, Ipali Water Project, Buhani Irrigation Scheme, and the South Maragoli Honey Processing Project.
The visits enabled the committee to document challenges and opportunities for improving sustainable environmental management.
