Soccer stakeholders and enthusiasts in Embu County have hailed the National Harambee Stars team for its stellar performance in the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN).
They said the win against DRC and powerhouse Morocco and a draw against Angola was a testament that soccer had finally come of age in the country with a new crop of youthful and dynamic players.
They exuded confidence that the national team is capable of advancing further, having already secured a spot in the quarterfinals with a game at hand.
Led by Embu County Sports County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Jane Waroga, the stakeholders have said the team had proven that they have what it takes to propel soccer to new heights given the opportunity and right environment.
Ms Waroga said Harambee Stars’ performance was also a big motivation for grassroots soccer in the county for talented youth.
“It is an inspiration for many talented young people who wish to pursue soccer as a career path,” she said.
She at the same time said soccer has become a unifying factor in the country as leaders and people from all walks of life come together to rally behind the national team.
“For once, we have seen Kenyans put aside their ethnic or political differences to support the national team. That is the spirit we want to see in this country,” she said.
Eastern Region FKF NEC Member Charles Njagi said the team consisting of homegrown players had proven that the country was endowed with immense talents.
He observed that the talents, if well tapped, can help many young people rely on soccer for upkeep and also put the country on the soccer world map.
Njagi also commended President William Ruto for his monetary reward scheme for the players, saying it was a good motivation and an inspiration to the team.
