Former Wajir gubernatorial aspirant Hassan Mohamed Aden has called on residents to turn out in large numbers for the ongoing voter registration exercise to boost the county’s political influence in national and county elections.
Speaking Monday at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) offices in Wajir, Aden, who declared interest in contesting the governor’s seat in 2027, said voter registration was key to ensuring the region’s population is well represented.
“There are about 200,000 voters in Wajir and we want to make sure that these numbers are significantly increased so that the population of Wajir becomes consequential in the presidential, national and county elections,” he said.
Aden noted that Wajir’s vast landmass, covering about 60,000 square kilometres, posed a challenge in mobilising eligible voters but stressed that deliberate efforts needed to be made to reach all communities.
“What determines your share of the national cake is your capacity to elect leaders who will be responsive to your needs. We must do every effort necessary to make sure our people participate in this important exercise,” he stated.
He urged the use of religious leaders, teachers, administrators and local institutions to sensitise and mobilise residents to register as voters.
Aden also commended IEBC officials in Wajir for what he termed as their support and commitment to enhance voter education across the county.
