Garissa governor Nathif Jama has officially commissioned the newly constructed County Assembly offices.
The construction of the new offices followed frequent fire outbreaks in their previous chambers, causing massive destruction of the building and equipment.
The office block will host the Assembly Chambers, the office of the Speaker and his deputy, County Assembly Public Service Board Chairperson offices and offices for various Assembly Committee Chairpersons.
Speaking during the event, governor Jama said that the offices will enhance the assembly’s working environment and service delivery to the members of the public.
“This is a permanent project. The building will always remain here to serve the people of Garissa. I urge our MCAs to make good use of it in their legislative work,” Jama said.
The County Assembly speaker, Abdi Gure, on his part, said that the construction of the new building not only helps in citizen service delivery but also restores the dignity of the Assembly.
“When fire gutted our old Assembly building, we entered one of the most challenging chapters in our institutional history. For months, we conducted House business in a small, crowded room, often holding plenary sessions in conditions unfit for a constitutional institution,” Gure said.
“We have rebuilt this place and the chaotic space we previously had has now been transformed into a clean, orderly parking lot. More importantly, the legislative heart of Garissa now beats inside this modern Assembly complex, complete with this elegant Chamber, a public gallery, dedicated committee and secretariat office blocks, and boardrooms,” he said.
