The alumni of Gendia High School, Rachuonyo sub-county, helped to plant over 300 trees at the facility to mark Mazingira Day celebrations.
The event, marked with the students’ procession, led by the school band, was also attended by government officials led by Shadrack Too, the area Assistant County commissioner (ACC).
“Today we have come here at Gendia High school to celebrate Mazingira day. I am an alumnus of this school from1979-1982, that is why I have come to plant and grow trees with the students in this school,” said Nuhu Omollo Masoud. The event saw over 300 seedlings planted at the school.
Masoud, who is also the patron of the ‘Plant trees For a Better Environment’ CBO, and holder of the Head of State Commendation (HSC), said he was happy the president of Kenya, Dr. William Ruto, remains committed to tree planting and has always insisted on the need to conserve the environment in order to avert the adverse effects of climate change.
He further hailed the Kenya Kwanza government for always encouraging people to engage in various conservation efforts, including tree planting, which aligns with the goal of accelerating forest restoration.
Masoud, who also donated a pen to each of the Form Four candidates at school, wished them well in their forthcoming exams while urging them to embrace the culture of tree planting in their homes after school.
The CBO patron also urged other area residents to follow suit and visit their former schools to plant trees, saying this would mobilize more citizens to participate in tree planting, so as to meet the national target of planting 15 billion trees by 2032
Peter Omondi, the Sub County Forester Officer who encouraged the student to protect and grow the trees, said the 300 seedlings planted included fruit trees and some assorted indigenous trees.
On his part, Gendia High School Principal James Okeno thanked the school alumni and government officials for celebrating Mazingira day at the school by planting trees to improve the area forest cover.
He promised to ensure each student takes care of the planted trees to ensure their growth into maturity.
The event was also attended by ACC East Karachuonyo Division, Ezekiel Odhiambo and Sub County Police Commander Stephen Tanui.
