Government to mop up learners still at home two weeks after schools’ reopening

Plans are underway to mop up all learners still at home after school reopened, Rachuonyo South Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Sylvester Mwangulo has said.

The DCC said this is in line with the government policy that stipulates that all children should be educated and hence should be in schools when school programs are ongoing.

“No child should be at home when others are in schools. Even those children who have cleared grade 9 and have attained low grades must be in school,” he said.

The DCC said the government has released capitation to all schools for term one so that the school programs run smoothly.

“The issue of school-going children staying at home with some loitering at shopping centers will not be tolerated,” he warned.

The DCC said the government was also concerned about the increasing rate of alcohol and drug abuse and warned that anybody who is found selling the same to children will be arrested and arraigned in court.

He warned bar owners that besides arrest, their licenses will be revoked.

The DCC was speaking Friday during the 7th edition of the “Back to School” event organized by Homa Bay County Women Representative Joyce Atieno Osogo (Bensuda).

Through the program, various learners received bursaries and sanitary pads under the affirmative action.

According to the Woman Rep, the program has five components, which she said include academic mentorship, bursary allocation, sexual reproductive health awareness, gender-based violence, and health and sanitation.
