Government urged to improve welfare of inmates

The Magenche Adventist Women’s Ministry from Kenyenya Sub-County in Kisii has called on the government to improve the living standards of prisoners at the Kisii GK main prison.

Speaking during an outreach at the facility in Kisii town, the women cited significant challenges faced by lactating mothers in the women’s section.

“The men’s section is also congested and requires improved hygiene to safeguard the inmates’ health,” added Sarah Job, a member of the ministry.

She called for partnerships between the government and the church to improve the living conditions of the inmates.

The ministry’s Chairlady Periz Osiemo claimed that some of the inmates had been wrongfully convicted as a result of doctored evidence aimed at fixing them.

Osiemo called on courts to be lenient on petty offenders regretting that some of them were serving long sentences, yet they were sole breadwinners in their families.

On her part, Florence Okero, another member of the ministry noted that evangelism programs play a key role in rehabilitating inmates and enabling them to reintegrate into society, thereby reducing crime.
