Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has pledged to promote holistic education in the county by nurturing students’ talents and leadership skills.
Speaking during the flag-off of 28 schools travelling to Meru County for the National Music Festival, Governor Nassir presented a cheque worth Sh2.5 million to support the institutions.
The festival will be taking place at Meru School and Kaaga Girls under the theme ‘enhancing creative economy through artistic expression for sustainable development’
“When I was a student, going for these trips was a very special thing because there was a lot of excitement among the learners,” recalled the Governor, noting that some students were locked out because of financial constraints.
He further urged the learners to conduct themselves with discipline, support one another despite coming from different schools, and strive to win both trophies and the admiration of Kenyans by showcasing unity.
“To the teachers, I appeal that we should be careful with our children. The phones of the Department of Education will be available, and if there is anything, we will communicate with the Governors of the counties that you’ll travel through,” stated the Governor.
The Governor also reiterated his commitment to channel revenue from liquor sales into funding extracurricular activities in schools. He revealed that 430 students are currently participating in a leadership boot camp during the August holiday.
Additionally, Governor Nassir highlighted efforts to improve Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) across the county. These include the provision of meals and capitation, as well as the construction of a new kitchen to cater for the rising number of learners benefiting from the free feeding program.
“In Secondary schools, all learners get a Sh5000 stipend, which will continue. Next year, the stipend will be increased progressively. Ultimately, education in Mombasa will be totally free. Nothing will hinder us from excelling,” he said.
