Govt begins construction of Majengo, Banja, Mbale markets

In a major boost to local trade and urban development, the construction of Majengo, Banja, and Mbale markets has kickstarted.

The groundbreaking exercise was led by officials from the State Department of Housing, Urban Development and Affordable Housing, in partnership with the County Departments of Physical Planning, Lands, Housing and Urban Development, and Commerce, Tourism and Cooperatives.

According to Prof. Mike Iravo, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Physical Planning, the projects form part of President William Ruto’s national agenda to establish 400 modern markets across the country.

The initiative aims to support small and medium enterprises by providing traders with modern, safe, and well-equipped working environments.

Prof. Iravo noted that construction is already underway for Luanda, Esibuye, and Esirulo markets, highlighting the county’s commitment to accelerating infrastructure development and improving local livelihoods.

Once completed, Majengo and Banja markets will each feature 200 stalls, while the larger Mbale Market will host 1,000 stalls.

All three facilities will include an ablution block, a child nursing area for breastfeeding mothers, an ICT centre, administrative offices, and both underground and elevated water tanks to ensure a reliable water supply.

The new markets are expected to improve working conditions for traders, enhance food safety, stimulate business growth, create employment opportunities, and increase county revenue.
