Gov’t development agenda on track, says Omollo

Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo has strongly defended President William Ruto’s administration, affirming that the Head of State remains committed to his campaign promises and is actively implementing them across the country.

Dr. Omollo outlined what he described as the five priority areas the President is committed to: agriculture, healthcare, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), digital transformation, and affordable housing.

On agriculture, Omollo cited significant interventions aimed at restoring food security.

He singled out the government’s intervention after public protests that greeted the new administration due to skyrocketing food prices, particularly maize flour (unga), revealing that the government has since stabilised prices of the staple food for many Kenyan families.

“Today, that is no longer the case. Has he delivered on that commitment? The answer is yes,” Omollo said. “And it’s not just at the national level—farmers here in Kisumu have also felt the impact, especially in sectors like sugarcane, tea, and coffee.”

In healthcare, the PS pointed out the shift from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the Social Health Authority (SHA), saying it had expanded medical coverage from five million Kenyans to over 25.9 million.

Speaking during the burial of Mama Ruth Ochieng Oiko, mother to Kabonyo Kanyagwal MCA Oiko Pete, in Kisumu County, Dr. Omollo said while leaders were previously bogged down in endless WhatsApp groups fundraising for medical expenses, the government’s reforms have significantly eased the medical burdens of many families.

“It is no longer a conversation about raising money for treatment; if anything, the support now comes in during bereavement. That’s how far we’ve come,” he said.

On the economy, Dr. Omollo said President Ruto’s administration had addressed barriers that hindered access to credit for small businesses, including lifting millions of Kenyans off Credit Reference Bureau (CRB) blacklists.

He said several new government-backed funds had made financing more accessible to entrepreneurs and the youth.

Dr. Omollo also hailed the digital transformation agenda, noting that digital hubs were being set up in every ward across the country with the help of Members of Parliament.

The centres, he said, would provide opportunities for online learning and digital jobs, especially for young people.

“A child no longer has to leave their home area to learn or work. That’s the power of the digital economy that this administration is building,” he stated.

On affordable housing, Dr. Omollo highlighted ongoing efforts to address the housing crisis, with over six million Kenyans currently living in informal settlements.

He said the housing programme was not only restoring dignity but also generating thousands of jobs for skilled and unskilled workers.

President Ruto, he said, has demonstrated willingness to work with leaders from across the country, a move that has sparked development in areas that were neglected.

He pointed out the Nyanza region as one area where the government is implementing multi-billion projects and urged the area residents to rally behind the government to fast-track economic growth in the area.

“We have an administration led by President Ruto that was elected into office in 2022.   The question we need to ask ourselves as a country is: what were his commitments to the people of Kenya, and is he delivering on them?” Omollo posed. “I can confidently confirm that he is delivering on each and every commitment he made.
