Govt fast-tracks road tarmacking projects in Bungoma

The government has bolstered efforts to ensure all roads that had been earmarked for tarmacking in Bungoma County are completed within the set timelines.

Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula confirmed that construction works on the Misikhu-Brigadier and Musikoma-Navakholo roads had resumed, as the contractors were now on site.

Wetang’ula noted that once completed, the roads would improve the road transport efficiency within the County particularly because the region is an agriculture zone.

He was speaking at Posta grounds in Bungoma town during an event organised to raise funds for the empowerment of Women groups in Kanduyi constituency.

The Speaker hailed the role that women play in society and pointed out that an empowered woman is able to take care of the family and the nation as a whole.

He asked the beneficiaries of the fund to utilise the funds prudently and invest in viable income-generating ventures in order to improve their livelihoods and educate their families.

The Speaker also informed Bungoma residents that plans to upgrade the Bungoma Referral hospital to Level 6 status were at an advanced stage, saying this will greatly improve health services and save patients the cost of travelling to Eldoret or Nairobi for specialised treatment.

With regard to technical education, the Speaker disclosed that the government had upgraded Sang’alo Institute into a National Polytechnic and that infrastructure at the institution would be renovated in order to offer quality training in tandem with the new status.

Concerning the sugar sector, the Speaker affirmed that Nzoia Sugar Factory had been leased to a private sector as a reform intended to improve efficiency that will ensure farmers receive timely payment for the cane delivered.

He said that Bungoma County had benefitted from the construction of modern markets, adding that the main Municipal market in Bungoma town currently under construction had created jobs for youths in the area.

The Member of Parliament for Kanduyi Constituency, John Makali, called on area residents to make development of the area a priority for the economic and social growth of the area.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki graced the occasion that was attended by hundreds of women from the County.
