The government is scaling up efforts to relocate families living in high-risk zones across Elgeyo Marakwet in the wake of the devastating Chesongoch and Murkutwo mudslides that claimed the lives of 41 people.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said the State is prioritising safe resettlement, psychosocial support, and long-term reconstruction of the lives of the affected community members.

“We are stepping up efforts to relocate people in high-risk areas to safer grounds,” Murkomen announced during a solemn requiem mass held at St. Maurus Primary School grounds in Chesongoch.
“We will ensure victims are resettled on geologically stable land and supported fully as they rebuild their lives.”
The CS joined families, leaders, and residents in laying to rest 31 victims of the tragedy, assuring mourners of the government’s unwavering commitment to accountability and support.
Murkomen directed administrators and security teams to strictly oversee the distribution of aid, warning against any misuse of resources meant for the victims.
“I have directed the County Commissioner to ensure that all the assistance from the government and well-wishers is used prudently,” he said. “Beneficiaries must be verified, and there will be zero tolerance for corruption.”
He also conveyed condolences from President Dr. William Samoei Ruto and national leadership.
“The President has directed us to expedite all the necessary support due to the affected families, and we will implement this to the latter,” he noted.
Murkomen assured those who lost homes that rebuilding materials were available and that support would be immediate.
He added that the government was exploring the feasibility of establishing a centralised affordable housing site for survivors.
“It would have been better to pick one area for building affordable housing, but we will work in consultation with the local community to ensure that is possible,” he said. “All the help should be used well for the benefit of the people.”
Elgeyo Marakwet Governor, Wisley Rotich, also attended the mass, standing in solidarity with grieving families.
“We have gathered here to honour 31 of our people who perished in the devastating mudslide that struck on the night of Friday, 31st October,” Governor Rotich said. “May their souls continue resting in peace. Sorry to all the affected families.”
As Elgeyo Marakwet continues to mourn, leaders reaffirmed their commitment to restoring safety, rebuilding homes, and strengthening disaster preparedness to prevent future tragedies.
