Govt roots for research-focused funding

The government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening university education through research, innovation and strategic partnerships, saying the approach is central to sustaining institutions under the new higher education funding model.

Speaking during Chuka University’s 14th Graduation Ceremony, Secretary for Higher Education and Research Dr Caroline Hunja, who represented the Principal Secretary for Higher Education, said universities must expand their resource base by leveraging competitive research grants, digital technologies and global collaborations.

She noted that institutions embracing research and innovation were better positioned to drive national development priorities, including digital transformation, job creation and community empowerment.

Vice Chancellor, Prof. Henry Mutembei, said the university had strengthened its research footprint, attracting over Sh380 million in research funding this year.

“Our academic staff have continued to excel in securing competitive grants from reputable organisations at national, regional and global levels,” he said.

Prof. Mutembei added that the University was fully aligned with the government’s new funding model and was working closely with industry partners to enhance training, innovation and employability.

He highlighted the role of the Centre for Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence in equipping graduates with digital skills and the impact of the University’s Kairini demonstration farm, which supports farmers’ training, environmental conservation and community outreach.

Igambang’ombe MP Patrick Munene, who was present at the ceremony, lauded the University for its growing contribution to regional and national development.

He called for continued support for programmes that empower youth with market-ready competencies.

Prof. Mutembei also commended the University Council for providing strong leadership and supporting participatory governance systems that continue to steer the institution forward.
