The Government intends to recruit a total of 116,000 teachers by 2027, Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki has revealed.
Speaking at Kasikeu Market Thursday, Prof. Kindiki disclosed that 24,000 teachers would be employed in December 2025, and that the government has so far employed 76,000, making a total of 100,000 teachers recruited since 2022.
“Previous governments have been recruiting only 4,000 to 5,000 teachers. The government has employed 76,000 teachers and an additional 24,000 will be recruited by December. The target will be achieved by 2027,” said Prof. Kindiki during a fundraising for an empowerment programme for women and youth groups in Kilome Constituency.
During the event, the DP advised youth never to be selective when it comes to job opportunities and instead challenged them to accept any occupation that comes their way in a bid to earn a living and uplift their livelihood.
He challenged them to take up job opportunities created under different programmes by the government, such as in the construction of Affordable Housing and Markets besides Kazi Majuu, so that youth are enabled to work outside the country.
“Through the construction of Affordable Housing and markets, 250,000 youth have been employed and 400,000 others got Kazi Majuu. The vulnerable in the society have been able to benefit from habitable housing,” he divulged.
“Also, through this programme of construction, we have revived the construction industry in the country for those selling iron sheets, sand, carpentry, welding and architecture,” he added.
Prof. Kindiki asked the youth to apply for Climate Workx (formerly Kazi Mtaani) online, saying the closing date is on Sunday, June 15, 2025, so that they can do cleaning and unclogging drainage systems besides other available assignments.
The DP said that the involvement of the youth in government programmes would curb having many of them exploited by politicians, besides involving themselves in criminal activities.
“We started Climate Workx on a pilot project in Nairobi County, where the youth were cleaning rivers and unclogging drainage. Now it will be expanded to all the 47 counties in the country and employ more youth in the programme,” said Kindiki.
On farming, Prof. Kindiki revealed that the government would continue to provide subsidised fertiliser, noting that the sector has employed many people and that currently, the country has enough food and surplus.
The DP said the government would construct ICT Hubs in all markets, Technical Vocational and Education Training (TVET) and Universities in the country to provide a platform for the youths to do e-commerce besides doing online jobs.
