The Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Interior and National Administration Kipchumba Murkomen has called upon the residents and the clergy of Makueni County to supplement government efforts to end issues of Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) that are prevalent in the area.
Consequently, Murkomen said that issues of GBV and sexual offences are impacting negatively on women and girls in Makueni County and the country at large noting that it cannot be acceptable in the society.
“I understand issues of GBV are prevalent in this region where men beat their wives and vice versa. I appeal to the people of Makueni to work together to end GBV,” said Murkomen while addressing parents at The Kitondo school in Mbooni East Sub County where he commissioned a 400-bed capacity dormitory.
During the event, he warned chiefs and their assistants against arbitrating on issues of women or girls being raped or defiled while saying such people should be arrested and be taken to court and be prosecuted according to the law of the land.
“Today I want to warn chiefs against arbitrating on issues of defilement, rape or GBV at home. The people involved should be arrested, record statements and be prosecuted,” warned the CS.
“There are many SGBV cases in Kenya, not Makueni alone and we must prosecutors – especially when a father defiles his daughter, such a person is an animal. We must take all legal action to protect children, women and families from defilement, GBV, and sexual offences for the country to move forward,” noted Murkomen.
In this regard, he called upon parents who are Christians to inculcate Christian principles besides being role models to children in an effort to make our homesteads habitable.
“As African Inland Church (AIC), Catholics or any other faiths, we must show our Christian values in our homes. We should live in love and unity and be role models to our children,” posed Murkomen.
