KCB FC defeated Tusker FC 2-0 in the SportPesa League 2025/26 opener staged at the Moi International Sports Centre on Friday, September 19.
KCBs’ new signing, former Gor Mahia winger Boniface Omondi, netted a first-half brace to ensure the Bankers secured all three points as they begin their charge for the new Sh15 million prize for the league champions.
Two-time Kenyan Premier League Golden Boot winner Erick Kapaito unfortunately missed a penalty as the 13 times champions Tusker FC lost 2-0 to KCB.
KCB coach Robert Matano said that confidence, cohesion and determination in the way the team played and in the way they prepared for the game worked well in their advantage in winning the game.
“The boys played according to the way they have been training. We have been together for two months and the results show that we have gelled well together,” he said
Coach Matano praised his team noting that locking the spaces, playing a combination play and maintaining the ball in the team worked out well.
“We have started, the journey is still long, 33 matches to go,” said Matano adding he has integrated young and experienced players to have a solid team since they have to learn from one another as experienced players nurture the young players.
On his part Tusker FC Coach Charles Okere said that the boys gave their best and coming to the next match they are going to rectify the mistakes that we made in the match.
“It was a crucial match but unfortunately, we did not maximise our opportunities. Our plan was to get maximum points in this game,” he said, adding that dropping those points is something that they need to rectify as early as possible so that by the time the league comes to an end they are in a good position.
