Kenya, Congo strengthen 43 flagship climate action projects

Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Dr Deborah Barasa held a high-level dialogue with the Minister of Environment, Sustainable Development, and the Congo Basin for the Republic of the Congo (Congo-Brazzaville), Hon. Arlette Soudan-Nonault.

The meeting focused on advancing the 43 flagship projects agreed in Brazzaville and incorporating partner feedback gathered during COP 30.

Both ministries are integrating key insights, finalizing technical and budgetary plans, and approving strategies for resource mobilization to accelerate project implementation.

The collaboration aims to advance ecosystem preservation, climate resilience, and sustainable development, ensuring commitments translate into tangible outcomes on the ground.

Both ministers emphasised that the Congo Basin’s preservation is a global imperative, offering opportunities for job creation, community empowerment, and securing Africa’s shared environmental future.

Discussions also addressed the upcoming Congo Basin Heads of State Summit for the Climate Commission, which Kenya will host in Nairobi, while the ministerial segment will be held in Brazzaville.

The ministers agreed to undertake a rapid study visit process to strengthen proposals, reinforce shared ownership, and accelerate project delivery.

Through this partnership, Kenya stands to gain global climate leadership, increased access to climate finance, job creation, skills transfer, innovation, regional stability, environmental security, enhanced diplomatic and economic visibility, and stronger South–South cooperation.

The dialogue underscores Kenya’s commitment to leveraging climate action for sustainable development and regional leadership.
