Kenya Meteorological services get new Ag. MD

Environment and Climate Change Principal Secretary Dr. Eng. Festus Ng’eno has appointed Edward Muriuki as the Ag. Director of Meteorological Services (KMD).

Muriuki takes the helm following the retirement of Dr. David Gikungu on 28th July 2025. A career Meteorologist at KMD, he holds a Master of Science Degree in Water Resources  Engineering from the University of Dar es Salaam, a PG Diploma (Hydrology), and a BSc (Maths and Meteorology), both from the University of Nairobi.

Muriuki joined the Kenya Meteorological Department in 1991 and has worked in various technical and administrative capacities within the department, including Senior Assistant Director in various divisions, Deputy Director of Technical and support services, the Principal of the World Meteorological Organisation/Regional Training Centre (Institute for Meteorological Training and Research), Nairobi, and Deputy Director in charge of the forecasting services branch before his appointment as Ag. Director of Meteorological Services.

“This appointment marks a significant milestone in my career as a meteorologist, and I look forward to enhancing the science of meteorology and hydrology in Kenya. I look forward to working closely with all our staff at KMD as well as our partners to improve weather and climate service delivery in the country,” Muriuki said.

With the increasing need for weather and climate information and the global call to implement the Early Warning for All initiative in Kenya, Muriuki’s vast experience and expertise will enable the Department to achieve its mandate for the provision of weather and climate information for the safety of life, protection of property, and conservation of the natural environment.

Meanwhile,  KALR, in collaboration with the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD), is conducting a two-day Media Training Workshop on the Interpretation and Dissemination of Weather and Climate Information Services under the Enhancing Climate Resilience in East Africa (ECREA) project at the KMD headquarters.

The two-day workshop aims to empower media practitioners with the skills to accurately interpret and communicate weather and climate information, particularly in relation to commercial bean production.

This training highlights the critical nexus between meteorological data and KALRO technologies, emphasising how this synergy supports informed decision-making among farmers, especially in KALRO Nyota bean variety production.

The workshop was officially opened by the Acting Director of KMD, Edward Muriuki, who termed the training as vital in the role of the media in translating technical climate data into actionable information for farmers, thus helping to strengthen climate resilience and food security in Kenya.
