Kiambu empowers youth with agricultural training, resources

John Mwangi, 26, from Ruiru, struggled to find a formal job after college.

When he learnt about Kiambu County’s piglet distribution programme, he saw an opportunity for financial independence.

Kiambu County is undergoing an agricultural transformation aimed at enhancing food security and livelihoods.

Under Governor Dr. Kimani Wamatangi, the county has launched initiatives to empower farmers and young people, strengthening agribusiness.

Through the distribution of free Kienyeji chicks, piglets, avocado seedlings, maize, and fertilisers, the county is creating economic opportunities.

Pig farming, in particular, has gained traction due to the growing demand for pork. Speaking at a piglet distribution event in Juja, Governor Wamatangi highlighted the programme’s broader impact.

“By giving young people economic opportunities, we are not just improving their lives but also steering them away from drugs and substance abuse. This programme is about creating a future where our youth are self-reliant and focused on growth,” he said.

Poultry farming remains a key livelihood for many households. To support the sector, the county is distributing free Kienyeji chicks, known for their resilience and high market demand.

Beneficiaries can rear them for eggs or meat, ensuring a steady supply to local markets, hotels, and households. Wangige Market, Kenya’s largest egg hub, is expected to benefit as increased production boosts trade.

To encourage agricultural diversification, the county is also distributing avocado seedlings, maize, and fertilizers. Avocado farming, driven by export demand, offers farmers a profitable venture, potentially increasing household incomes.

One of the most impactful programmes under Governor Wamatangi’s administration is the Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) feeding initiative. Covering 524 ECDE centers, the program provides young learners with eggs three times a week.

Proper nutrition in early childhood is crucial for cognitive development, school attendance, and overall health. For children from low-income families, the feeding program ensures access to essential proteins.

As Kiambu cements its status as an agricultural hub, these initiatives will have long-term benefits, providing a model for leveraging agriculture for socio-economic transformation.

Through strategic investment and community participation, Kiambu is demonstrating that agriculture is not just a means of survival but a path to prosperity
