Kiambu inducts 319 interns under Affordable Housing Programme

The government on Tuesday inducted and trained 319 interns under the Affordable Housing Programme at Kiambu National Polytechnic in Kiambu County.

The interns will be deployed to affordable housing projects across the county to support construction, supervision and project delivery as Kiambu continues to experience rapid urban growth and rising housing needs.

The one-year internship programme, expected to officially commence in January 2026 is part of the government’s efforts to address the growing demand for decent and affordable housing, which is a key pillar of national development and urban planning.

The Deputy County Commissioner for Kiambu Sub-County, Mr Titus Macharia (DCC), who spoke during the official opening of the training, said the programme is designed to equip young professionals with practical skills while strengthening accountability in public service.

“This programme is not just about employment but about preparing you to serve the public with integrity, professionalism and commitment,” said Mr Macharia.

County Director of Housing Mr Michael Kiarie said safety at construction sites will remain a priority as the interns are deployed to various project locations.

“This internship programme gives young professionals hands-on experience that will strengthen their skills and enhance their employability, but safety at construction sites remains a priority.

Interns must strictly observe site safety measures and follow instructions from supervisors as they apply what they have learnt,” said Mr Kiarie

Housing officer Mr. Silvester Muruthi said the interns will mainly play a supporting role in ongoing affordable housing projects.

“Interns will be attached to housing projects within or near their areas of residence to improve efficiency and ease of supervision,” said Muruthi.

One of the beneficiaries, Ms Mercy Kioko, was optimistic that the programme will offer her a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience while contributing to development initiatives in the county.

The Affordable Housing Internship Programme is part of the government’s broader agenda to empower youth while expanding access to decent and affordable housing.
