Achieving a significant milestone, Kiambu County’s Own-Source Revenue hit Sh5.4 billion in the last Financial Year, an 86 per cent surge in local revenue mobilization by the county government in just two years.
According to a County Treasury Report, the Sh5.4 billion collected in revenue by June 30 represents a 19 per cent increase over the Sh4.6 billion collected in the 2024-2025 Financial Year, approximating a Sh900 million growth.
Speaking at the County Government Own Source Revenue stocktakingevent held at the County Headquarters, Governor Kimani Wamatangi attributed the boost to the automation of revenue systems, a move that sealed theft loopholes at the point of collection, allowing for the increase without hiking existing fees or levies.
“We have achieved great results as a result of automating all our revenue collection processes. We now manage all county collections from a single Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) platform.”
“The system has revolutionized revenue collection, making it real-time by mapping every collection point. This seamless integration allows for efficient and immediate monitoring of all revenue.” He explained.
The Controller of Budget Financial Reports shows a remarkable upward trajectory in Kiambu County’s Own Source Revenue (OSR) collection since August 2022, when Governor Wamatangi assumed office. In just two years, the county has increased its OSR by nearly Sh2 billion. The 2022/2023 Financial Year saw Sh3.6 billion collected, a rise from Sh2.9 billion in the prior year.
“Our focus isn’t only on revenue collection but also on ensuring that the funds are widely used for projects and programs that make a real, visible impact,” stated the Governor.
The County Boss highlighted various sectors where the funds were being effectively utilized, including the completion of 312 model ECDE centers, upgrades to 36 Level Three and Level Four hospitals, installation of solar streetlights and construction of bus parks.
In agriculture, over 700,000 farmers have received improved Kienyeji chicks, piglets, maize, and fertilizer, while new markets and stadiums are also under development.
Nancy Kirumba, the County Executive Committee Member for Finance, announced the county’s ambitious goal of collecting Sh7.9 billion in the new Financial Year.
She affirmed the Department of Finance’s commitment to delivering the technical and operational support crucial for better service delivery and realizing their revenue objectives.
